15 Years of Blog Posts and Still Writing About The Same Issues

Happy birthday! My blog is officially 15 years old today 🎂 My first post being posted on October 9th, 2011.

It has been very interesting to read that post called, "They Want The Shiny New One" as I think it is a good example of what I've always tried to be, a critical user of educational technology. The post was written pretty much at the beginning of the hype surrounding Apple iPads. A time when most primary schools were being seduced by these shiny new things. The phrase "shiny new one" came from a New York Times article that I had read which looked at the way educational software companies cherry-pick scientific research results on their products proving how they improve pupil performance. It also looked more widely at issue of whether technology can really improve standards, not just improve levels of pupil engagement. I'm still writing about these very issues 15 years on, but now the "shiny new one" is generative AI or latest online 'learning game' that primary schools have purchased. Sadly, it looks like nothing really changes in the world of EdTech. I'm still writing posts about exactly the same issues, the only difference being that the shiny new one changes. The hype cycle continues, governments and the education sector don't appear to learn anything from the previous tech-hype failure, little evidence that learning standards have improved, more money spent, but they still race headlong into the next cycle, with the promise that this one will revolutionise teaching and learning forever.
